3 Tips to Reduce Your Homeowners Insurance

In 2009, the LA Legislature created the wind mitigation credit program through a new section in the insurance code, which by law requires admitted insurance companies to provide discounts to policy holders for certain types of construction and building materials that reduce the risk for wind damage.  For about $300 and a relatively quick inspection, you can get a Wind Mitigation Survey completed to potentially reduce your homeowners insurance premium by thousands of dollars!  If you have any of these features on your property, you could potentially benefit from this survey!

  • Hip shaped roof

  • Gable roof with braced ends

  • Hurricane clips on your roof

  • Secondary Water barrier on your roof

  • Roof deck attachments

  • Shutters, impact rated windows and/or precut plywood boards for window protection (even if you don’t have them for every window!)

  • Home built after 2007 (codes changed then so you would likely have hurricane clips!)

  • And others, so ask your certified inspector for details!

If you do not have any wind mitigation features on your home, consider retrofitting your property for up to a 5K deduction on your taxes

A certified Fortified Roof is proven to hold up better in a storm, can provide a discount on your homeowners insurance, AND you could potentially install one with the help of a state funded grant!  Fortified roofs were designed with materials that are readily available in the market, but installed in a way that has been tested and proven to perform by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety.  Fortified building codes can apply to windows, foundation, and much more, but a Fortified Roof is the most effective way for an existing homeowner to retrofit their property for better protection.  Louisiana has passed recent laws to adopt the Fortified building codes in the hopes of mirroring the successes of a similar program in Alabama to:

1) make our buildings more resilient against storms,

2) reduce insurance costs for property owners, and

3) attract more insurance companies to write in our area.

Starting as early as October 1, 2023, Louisiana will open up applications for 10K grants for homeowners to install a certified Fortified Roof.   If you are in the market for a new roof, you should seriously consider working with a Fortified Roof!  Note that NOT ALL ROOFERS are certified to install fortified roofs and the certification must be completed with a cooperating certified inspector.  For more information visit:
